Matthew Loughlin-Day fuses the melodies of The La’s and Everly Brothers with the oddness and noise of Tom Waits and Galaxie 500, to “create magical worlds” (Mojo Magazine).
Since the COVID lockdowns of 2020 however, he has also explored a more pastoral world, taking in the olde weird folk traditions of yore and incorporating the influences of artists like Bill Callahan, Bill Ryder-Jones and Scott Walker, all of which culminated in two lo-fi albums, recorded in a spare bedroom on his phone, ‘Goldfinch’ and ‘Nuthatch’. Released as a double CD in 2022, they sold out, with all profits raising £600 for foodbank charities.
The set at Timber Festival will be a blend of these two universes, with songs also being played from The Shipbuilders’ upcoming second album ‘This Blue Earth’ and Matthew’s lost third solo album ‘Kingfisher’.
